Seeing Fireflies

Here's a little of my story...
I grew up across the street from a large cornfield in a small town in rural Minnesota. Since then, my world has expanded beyond what I could have imagined. I still love broad spaces. I guess that cornfield became more a part of me than I thought. A graduate of Buena Vista College in Iowa (BA, Elementary Education) and Princeton Seminary in New Jersey (MDiv, ThM), I met my husband over 25 years ago while serving a church in Switzerland. I live in the Chicago suburbs with my husband and enjoy our two college-aged young adults.

My focus has been on spiritual formation for the last couple of decades. I find hope and strength through my faith. With God, our ordinary everyday lives are remarkable. I seek to invest in helping people and organizations grow and develop. I find purpose in writing, teaching, and spiritually companioning individuals and groups. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to serve in various ways throughout the years, including as a pastor, educator, and volunteer in the church and public and private education. At a pivotal point, I felt a call to focus on serving as a homemaker and mother. I am grateful for that meaningful season of my life.

I enjoy a good cup of coffee and good company. You might find me out on a walk or reading a book. I hope sharing my story and how I am learning will connect with your story and encourage you in your journey.

Why seeing fireflies?
When our children were small we always looked forward to the arrival of fireflies in our backyard. I still enjoy seeing fireflies. It reminds me to stop and see the light - the source of wisdom and life. In this way, seeing fireflies can also be a way of living. If you want to see a firefly you have to be intentional. You have to know where to look. What if we could learn where to look for the things that matter? What if we could learn to see the light?
